Honestly I just came to shake my imaginary dreads to Grove St. Party, hear 2 Chainz say TRUUU and do his little Beez in the Trap dance, and be wowed by guest surprises.I did not come to the MetLife Stadium for messy shit- and messy shit and a lackluster show is what I got. Such a shame too as it was my very first summer jam.

Summer Jam is dubbed as a legendary hip-hop concert filled with amazing surprises. This is the concert where  Jay-Z brought out the late king of Pop, Michael Jackson! The station always promises its audience historic moments. Somehow something was missing this year- it’s headlining act!

Headliner, Nicki Minaj pulled out of the show after being disrespected by one of the station’s DJs. Earlier in the day an excited  Minaj tweeted: “History will be made @ Hot97 Summer Jam tonight. I really hope you’re there to witness it.” Somehow things went awry.

Here’s a quick rundown of what happened

DJ, Peter Rosenberg dissed the Starships rapper telling the crowd that he doesn’t see it for the song and that it is not real hip-hop.

YMCMB President, Lil Wayne, not tolerating blatant disrespect  decided to pull all YMCMB artists from the line-up.

Funkmaster Flex Flex Hogan then went out to drop bombs and  subliminally call out Minaj, shouting “I’m dedicated to take you down”  and that he no longer f**s with commercial rappers.

Per Minaj’s tweet Beenie Man, Nas, Lauryn Hill,  Foxy Brown, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Camron, Jae Millz, Tyga and Gudda Gudda were the special guests slated  to appear during her set. However the show’s saving moment came when Nas did his own set and brought out Ms. Lauryn Hill for a performance of the classic If I Ruled the World. Hill then went on to perform Lost Ones  and Fugee La.

How dope would it have been to see  Foxy,Nicki Minaj, and Lauryn Hill on stage…TOGETHER! That would have been the ‘historic’ Summer Jam moment I was hoping for.

In regards to yesterday’s debacle Lauryn Hill later commented on Twitter in defense of Nicki’s decision not to perform:

I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs, and walking with integrity. We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted, or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics. We can do better than this, there is a better way, or else ‘we’ (the proverbial we) find ourselves in danger of being hypocrites!!!

Amidst stunt queen antics from the stations’ DJS, Lil Kim somehow managed to ease her way into the controversy via Twitter when she learned rivals Foxy Brown and Nicki Minaj  were going to  perform together with upcoming artists Azealia Banks in tow. She took to Twitter to throw shots at Minaj and remind her fans that Nicki is stealing her idea of bringing female rappers together:

Hot damn ho here we go again. Monkey see monkey do. I heard the haters are joining forces against the Queen. LMAO !!!! Have a great show!!! Break a leg!!!! Hahahaha!!!! My love for the female hip hop movement has always been genuine. All the females I’ve been bringing out recently I have love for. If u see anybody else doing it … Its not genuine …Know it’s only to copy and compete with me …….. For those of u who have been brainwashed by the fraud …Let’s open our eyes now people …the clone is not bringing ladies out for the luv. It’s strictly because I’m doing it ! :) Love u Team Kim and all my fans across the world ..they’ll believe one day very soon !!”

Earth to Kim, Nicki and Foxy were cool way before your beef started. I’m not team Kim or team Nicki, both artists are completely capable of existing in the same space without rivalry. Kim is legendary, but her icon status seems to falter every time she acts  petty. Regroup Kimmy, just go sit in a corner somewhere. Azealia Banks said it best via a series of tweets:

Oh honey …. You are just too insecure.Poor Kim. :( I just wish she would just hurry up and be legendary again…… Shes better than pay pal mixtapes & useless press.

Lil Wayne did the right thing pulling  Nicki from  the show. Why would you invite an artist to headline then disrespect them before they take the stage. There is a time and place for everything but that was definitely not the right time to cross the line. Hot 97 you are messing with people’s money. There were a bunch of ‘barbz ‘ that came out to see Nicki and you robbed these poor kids of that. Such a shame.

If you hear someone saying that Summer Jam was movie, they are telling a boldface lie. Well actually it was a movie-  a flop of a movie! Don’t get me wrong the artists that touched the stage delivered, I just wanted more.

Pictures and video coming!
